Mist Bath

A futuristic bath can be constructed as a set of interconnected cushions in a skeleton like outline that support the lying body comfortably without covering too much of its surface area. Under the cushion there will be a water collection container to drain the dirty water and soap. There will be no shower head but instead the walls of this futuristic bath will be covered with thousands of small spray heads that would spray warm mist (hot water drops pressured with warm air).

As one starts the bathing process he or she starts the machine and waits. The machine sprays cleaning / disinfecting material and soon after sprays some clean mist to wash it off. Then the person lays down on the skeleton support cushions that are suspended in the middle of the tab with comfortable springs that allow the person to adjust his or her position to the most comfortable form.

The mist starts warm according to the person preset and gets warmer or colder according to user control. Also the mist jets can create variable spray patterns for massaging and relaxation purposes with matching sounds and light effects.

Mist starts on command to include soap bubbles that gently cover the body and finally a stronger water only mist washes the soap and finishes the process.

The process can be as short as a few minutes and because it is mostly warm air with water drops it does not waste a lot of water.

There is an add-on device that can be placed on the head and it washes the hair in the same way or just massages your scalp if you have no hair to wash.

The coolest and fastest way to make noodles

I love making fresh pasta. It is annoying to have to carry around the pasta machine to create quick noodles or not being able to make them if you are in a kitchen that does not have a pasta machine (=normal people…). With the pasta machine you have specific cutters and you can’t always get the width you want for your noodles.

My idea is to use a device that looks like a spring.

spring

You simply create your pasta dough, roll it flat until it is as thin as you like it, adjust the spring on top of it until the width between the spring metal circles is in the width you want and use your roll to roll on top of it and cut the pasta using the spring to a long noodle.

With a few knife strokes you can cut the long single noodle to many shorter noodles.

Keep in mind that a regular spring will have variable thickness from the center to the end. My proposed device will keep the same width along its length (might add a few metal rings but can easily be done).

Deep Fry Alternative

We love deep fried foods although they are very bad for us.

We love the taste of fried fat and the crisp crust that is formed on deep fried foods.

I tried thinking how we can get similar texture without deep frying in oil.

I will try to ignore solutions I know about and try to come up with something creative-even if not practical.

Some immediate ideas:

1) Use a combination of a torch and water spray. The water spray will cover the food item with a thin layer of mist and the torch will evaporate the water from the surface and stop just short of burning the food item. After a few minutes and 10-20 cycles the food item should be pretty crispy…

2) A special material that is nano-thin can be applied to the food item and stick to it via some method and then deep fried. After the frying is over an electric current / magnet or any other form can remove the material and leave a food item that has been deep fried but with no oil on it.

3) A similar idea can be to deep fry and then apply two processes. One to remove the fat using nano-technology to shave it off and another with antioxidants to remove damaged food bits that are unhealthy because of mutations caused by the frying.

4) Another idea is a chemical process that will cause the food surface to crisp with contact. The food will be cooked as usual and crisping of the surface will be done later by spraying or dusting a non toxic agent.

5) Someone can also manufacture a crisp powder. The powder contains very small but hard bits. The food item will be coated with the material and when a reaction agent is applied such as a spray of water or short pan fry without oil will join the bits together to create a crisp exterior.

6) Adding a chemical to water to change its viscosity and allow it to get to higher temperature without evaporating. Deep flying in a gel like substance made from water or other liquid.

7) Using very hot air and possibly mist spray to create the same texture. This is almost the same as number 1 but with hot water instead of a torch with direct fire.

8 ) Deep fry as usually and then put the food in a special nano-shaver that will peel the top layers of atoms to remove oil traces.

9) Creating a special paper towel that includes agents that bond with oil. Much like it is done with soap that bonds to the oil molecules. The paper towel will not only absorb the extra oil but also will bond with and remove more of the oil than is possible with a regular paper towel.

10) Deep Frying in sand like material. Small bits that can be heated to 300 degrees and poured on the food items. After a few seconds or a minute the sand like bits can be removed (vacuumed? poured out?).

11) A chain rug created from small interconnected metal rings covered with some heat conducting material that will not burn the food can be wrapped around or placed on a food item.

The Omnipotent and Benevolent God

Filed under: Articles — Tags: — Roy Daya @ 06:20

When I was first introduced to the idea of God, I was told that it is Omnipotent and Benevolent. Omnipotent meant that he is all-powerful or that it can do whatever it wants with no imposed constraints. This brings us to the question of intent. I was promised that God is Benevolent or full of goodness and warmth towards us, its favorite creations.

I see myself as a semi-helpful being. I sometimes try to use my limited power to enhance the life experience of other beings.

If I were both all powerful and all good I would eradicate all evil and suffering.

How is it possible that there is a supreme being that is both omnipotent and benevolent and still there is so much suffering and pain?

Because it is difficult to think about things in the scope of the universe—or even humanity—I want to start by looking at the smallest human experience.

Consider a person with an illness: That person experiences suffering and pain. With no relation to what unforeseen goal or end this may serve, if God is infinitely powerful and infinitely good, would it be possible for it to have the same result with one fraction of a second of pain less for that person?

Some people claim that the world is ordered in a certain way to achieve a long term strategic goal. If God were not all powerful this would make sense, but when something is not limited in its powers it could create a scenario where the same goals are achieved with a fraction of a second of suffering less.

When I see people in pain and obvious agony I wonder if it is possible for an omnipotent and benevolent God to intentionally inflict suffering where its unlimited power could avoid it.

The only logical assertion—and correct me if I am wrong—is that unlimited goodness cannot intentionally create suffering. Unlimited power could easily fix any unintentional suffering caused in the quest of ultimate happiness of us as the dearest creation.

So, there may be a benevolent or omnipotent supreme being, but the combination is impossible. The combination cannot produce the experience of suffering as we experience it, for whatever reason, because there would always be a way to accomplish the same with less suffering when power is not limited, until we would reach no suffering and ultimate universal bliss.

We don’t need to concern ourselves with some grand plan because, as players in this system, even our subjective momentary experience is counted towards universal benevolence.

After realizing that the omnipotent and benevolent God combination is logically impossible with the experience of pain and suffering, we can try to evaluate lesser possibilities for that being.

The options we are left according to the initial quest for God are benevolent but impotent or omnipotent and malevolent or, in simple terms, kind but weak or powerful but nasty. There is also the most obvious option that it does not exist but for argument sake let’s try to analyze this being as if we believe that it does exist.

The benevolent but impotent being—I will not call it God as God was my definition to a being that must be omnipotent—will likely try to enhance our earthly experience as much as it can in its limited powers. It is said that you can assess the gardener’s skills by looking at the garden he keeps. Judging from the amount of suffering and pain in the world and the negative subjective experiences of so many people, this proposed being is not very powerful at all. In fact, the positive experiences, when contrasted with the neutral and negative experiences, do not seem to a casual observer as if there is a major benevolent force affecting the natural occurrence of things. As this benevolent being is good-seeking by nature, it will do its most to inflict as much warmth and kindness on our subjective experience. Would our praying and pleading cause it to act more forcefully on our behalf?—only if it is not benevolent by nature! A benevolent being does not require any pleading to do as much good as it possibly can under its limitations.

To conclude the discussion of the benevolent but impotent being, I will say only that it might exist somewhere doing its best to assist with little global impact. It is not likely motivated differently by our praying as it is benevolent by nature.

Let us now discuss the omnipotent and malevolent being. This may be some kind of a god, as it is omnipotent, but it is not the nice and kind God we pray to. As it is omnipotent, it by definition, implemented its vision to the letter. Not limited by power and time, the possible becomes the exact will. Judging again, by the result and by our subjective experience and those around us, we can see a lot of evil but also a lot of good. It is not likely that an all powerful and evil god implemented its will as it will not likely allow for the goodness we experience. For many experiences we subjectively experience, we can imagine another experience that would hurt us more or torment us even more, even if just a little more, and for a fraction of a second. An all powerful and evil God would not allow for these relative grace moments by its nature.

To conclude the discussion of the malevolent and omnipotent being, I believe that it cannot exist because of a logical contradiction between its nature and our subjective experience of goodness at some point in time. This point in time could be reduced even by a fraction by such a God.

Another possibility is an impotent and malevolent being. It merits the same conclusion as the impotent benevolent being. It may exist, acting according to its nature with limited power and unclear results. As this too is not really God as usually defined, I will simply move on.

As I understand things, not only that the God about whom I was told cannot exist, I also take comfort in the realization that its malevolent version cannot exist as well. All I am left with is to think about other logical possibilities. There are two groups of other alternative beings I need to look at: the omnipotent but indifferent and its lesser possibility, the impotent indifferent, as the first group; the less totalitarian versions, the strategist egoistic omnipotent and strategist egoistic impotent as the second group.

My treatment of the first group is very short. If they exist it is most likely meaningless to us as they don’t care. Omnipotent or impotent, the question of our well being is not on their agenda for the good or for the bad. Is it possible that with pleading and praying we might be able to sway, influence or manipulate these beings to act on our favor? I suggest that it is checked immediately. I will even try to suggest a method of experimentation. We could take a device that simulates coin tosses and see if our praying causes the reading to deviate from what is statistically plausible. If we get no difference we can assess that either these beings do not exist or that they don’t care to the extent that our pleading cannot pierce their apathy. Getting positive results in our experiment with the simulated coin toss will not prove anything really, other than the fact that praying had some correlation with the effect and, as we all know, correlation does not imply causation. Although it will not serve as a proof of any kind or positive results correlated with praying, it can give us something potentially useful to further scrutinize.

My last group of beings left is the strategic or egoistic. These beings are also divided into the omnipotent and impotent. My view is that an egoistic omnipotent would implement its strategy with no relation to what we do. Such a being that is obsessed with a very specific grandiose plan will do whatever it takes to accomplish its goals and as an omnipotent God will accomplish it. As this being is not limited in anyway, nothing we can do can have any effect on its decided course of action, so praying, etc is a pointless waste of time from a practical god-influencing point of view.

The impotent subtype deity is doing its best to implement its ego-driven strategy and, since it is limited in power, its success is not guaranteed. With a being that is not all powerful but acts according to a self motivational strategy, we may have a chance to influence the outcome. Not to influence the plan itself, because by definition this being is self motivated and egoistic, but use our limited power to act with accordance or against such a plan. In this case praying to this being is pointless as is the omnipotent egoistic being scenario since it is motivated by a plan and not by our wants—which is painfully obvious when looking around. The only strategy we must decide on, as I said previously, is whether to use our limited powers to disrupt or assist the plan and affect its success. The problem with deciding what to do is that we have no idea what the plan is. We have many written resources, from various alleged heavenly sources, and they are very different from one another; even for a certain holy book there are countless interpretations. Are we likely to know if any one book is the true representation of the grand plan of the impotent egoistic being? Are the books a real representation of the plan or a set of rules to make us assist the plan? Would such a being disclose the real plan or just the stories that would make us comply and assist the chances of the plan? As a reminder, this being has an interest with its egoistic plan and not with our well being.

I think that our collective effort to enhance our earthly experience is more beneficial to mankind than trying to follow obscure plans with unknown planner or outcome. Moreover, the various scriptures are filled with events that, to say the least, are not kind to people.

Assuming that the conclusion section may not be overly popular with people obsessed with worship, I will save myself from the ill-tempered ones by not writing one. Their hot tempers are, hopefully, accompanied with lack of patience which means they would not read this article to the end. The lack of conclusion is to protect myself from the ones who will skip ahead in attempt to hate me with little effort. Too bad! If you are one of them go back to the second paragraph, or give up and get a life. For the others the conclusion is obvious. Actually this whole article is obvious, but there was some comforting pleasure in the process of writing it down. It all started because I fell asleep in front of the television and woke up to the loud voice of what looked like an Christian preacher of Asian descent, and I realized that he and his broadcasted predecessors infiltrated my dreams for about half of the night. This is my retribution for a night’s sleep that was ruined because of their blubbering.

Those people, who think that worship of imaginary beings is good for our mental well being, need to have their chemical balance restored. The sooner the better for them as well as for the rest of us!

Surviving a burning building

Filed under: Ideas — Tags: — Roy Daya @ 08:26

I wrote an hour ago about a few ideas on how to increase the survival rate in case of a plane crash. I continued thinking about it and thought of a few ideas to increase the chances of survival when you are in a burning building.

1) A device that is basically a rope (different devices for different floors) and a thick tube on top of the rope about a meter long with a strap tied to it. In the tube there are springs that provide friction as well as get winded. A person would break the window (or open it if possible) and put the strap around him. He would then climb outside and hang outside on the rope. The tube would lower him down at a predefined rate (there can be a setting for child/adult/extra heavy). As the person reaches the ground he removes the strap from himself and the tube climbs back up automatically because of the spring to take the next person down.

2) A sphere that can be opened like these instant opening tents but from a fireproof material with metal tubes. Also part of the kit are two containers. An air tank and a liquid nitrogen container. When there is a fire so strong that one cannot escape and must wait for rescue team to break in-they open the sphere and sit inside. Connecting both containers they close the sphere with them inside. The Air tank gives them fresh air to breath for 1-2 hours and the liquid nitrogen connected to a sprinkler makes sure that the external sphere material is kept frozen.

3) A Crazy idea (crazier…). When there is fire the major killer is often the thick smoke. It would be great if we could charge up the building with enough static electricity to make all the smoke particles jump and glue themselves to the burning walls. Keeping the air cleaner and suffocating the fire.

Plane Safety

Filed under: Ideas — Tags: — Roy Daya @ 06:54

I saw a show about increasing plane safety when the plain makes an emergency landing or crashes. One of the main problems was according to the program was that fuel would burst out of the tank and create a ball of fire that can kill many of the impact survivors.

The show had a few experiments such as making the fuel have higher viscosity to limit its spread after impact as well as creating a flexible rubberlike inner fuel tank that would not break on impact. Both ideas did not perform very well in the experiments.

I will do now a 5 minute brain dump of all my immediate ideas as I type… ideas to increase the chance of surviving a plane crash.

1) Special container can be connected on top of the fuel tank set to crack open as the fuel tank breaks. The container would contain liquid nitrogen which is very cold. Upon impact it would spread into and around the fuel and freeze the drops and fumes that might explode otherwise. I don’t know if this is practical at all. It is just an idea.

2) A number of rockets can be attached to both sides of the plane and in case of crash landing they can be ignited and slow down the plane allowing it to land more gracefully. It can use the plane fuels (good to reduce fuel remaining in tanks on impact and saves from carrying additional fuel for the rockets-bad in case the crash landing is because of lack of fuel). Alternatively it can use solid rocket fuel.

3) A set of few large parachutes can be connected to the plane. Although the landing will not be very smooth it will be better than crashing into the ground.

4) The back of every sit should have an airbag that will not inflate on impact but be inflated in a slower rate before the impact with electric pump with manual inflating option.

5) There can be a huge net suspended between two towers in a distance of few hundred miles of several large airports. Planes that cannot land safely would fly into the collapsible net high above the ground and it would grab the plane and slow it down until it suspends in the net. The net can be lowered later to get the plane down.

6) There can be a special crash landing strip that is collapsible like egg carton but a few meters tall and a mile long. The plane would crush into it and it will absorb much of the impact. The holes in the collapsible materials can be filled with anti flame foam  that will be sprayed on the crashing plane as it moves on the strip.

Ok. 5 minutes are up. I need to get back to work…

Biometric System Venture

I was called to sit with a CEO of a new Biometric System venture and review their current business model.

I reviewed the business model and convinced him that the projected costs are under estimated and that customer acquisition will probably be harder than expected in his models.

What followed was a two hour brainstorming looking for alternative business models and solutions that use their focus areas but with innovative approaches that will focus on one of these strategies:

- Bring in larger and more profitable projects that will have a higher profit margin.
- Create a number of cheap and cool products that can be sold with minimal human interaction by investing in online marketing.

We ended up having several very good ideas that each of them could make a good business case.

He will further analyze these new options and consult with his team and they will decide how to proceed.

It was lots of fun. It’s a cool industry and he is a great guy.

Merck

I consulted to Merck on many occasions in the last two years with very good results.

The sessions where around the use of the DigitalClay platform as a tool to create various solutions that are fast to implement, fully customized and more affordable than any other solution considered.

We discussed and implemented together about 40 solutions that range from G&A,  HR, Finance to IT and Marketing. We also created an innovative clinical trials and research management system and several prototypes for systems that might be put into use in the near future.

Projects I consulted on won internal Merck awards for innovation and process optimizations.

I am still working with Merck and loving it.
